" HOME, SWEET HOME"
"HOME, Sweet Home/'which is so essentially an English song in sentiment and feeling, was, curiously enough, written by an American, John Howard Payne. Perhaps though, as he was a nomad the greater part of his feverish existence, it were fitter to describe him as a Cosmopolitan, for truly, in any case, Art is ever cosmopolitan. But the song was first sung in an English opera, or operatic melodrama, entitled " Clari, the Maid of Milan," the words being written by John Howard Payne, and the music composed and arranged by Sir Henry Bishop, who was decidedly English.
